Lately, I haven’t found many TV shows that truly resonate with me until I watched The Chi. Initially, I thought it would be a very safe depiction of life in urban Chicago. I was very shocked to see that it wasn’t. I’ve never been to Chicago – it’s definitely on my bucket list. But watching even just the first episode gave me a true glimpse into everyday life that kids, teens, and young adults are facing.
I grew up on the Southside of Atlanta. While my neighborhood was nowhere near as rough as in the neighborhood depicted on The Chi, I saw lots of similarities that I remember from my adolescence. My neighborhood was more suburban, but there were many elements of the hood still present within my community. Any little decision I made could ultimately make me end up having a totally different lifestyle – friends I chose, parties I attended, boys I dated.
I reflected on how I could’ve been that girl who was a teenage mother, or tried drugs, or involved myself with people who did illegal things to make money because I knew plenty of people in those same predicaments.
Episode one will have you hooked. All of the characters and situations are real life situations. One scene that truly resonated with me was the emotion shown from the character Brandon after experiencing true hardship, but you will have to watch to see just what i’m referring to!
There’s no other way to describe how amazing the first episode is and I can’t wait to finish out the rest of the season.
